  • i have a love-hate relationship with my MT blog. i love it because it's extremely customizable, anyone can post a comment without being a member of any @#$% service, i don't have to worry about losing posts (cuz then i can yell at my webhost and find it backed up somewhere instead of wailing pointlessly at the underappreciated and overworked folks at xanga), you can get some really kick-ass software addons for it, and blah blah blah i'll stop boring you. Anyway, i was trying to install some of extra little MT's plugins, and while i got one to work, i can't seem to get the other one to work. So i'm throwing my hands up for the night and just posting here.

had a very good eating weekend. I made a modified version of beef bowl for dinner last night that turned out to be ridiculously good. Here's the recipe i ended up using (modified from the one i originally intended to use... long story)

Yummy tasty gyu-don (beef bowl w/egg)

4 C short grain rice (mm... sticky short grain rice...)
    1 T canola oil
    1 medium sized white onion
.8 lbs sukiyaki meat (the cheapest kind i found at marukai)
    1/4 C mirin
    1/4 C soy sauce
    1 C water
    1 t sugar
    1/2 T hon-dashi
3 or 4 handfuls of prewashed bagged spinach (hey, it was leftover from spinach salad the night before)
    4 large brown eggs, beaten

Cut onions into 1/2 inch wide slices and set aside. Heat wok on medium heat for a few seconds, then spread 1 T oil to lightly coat the bottom of the pan. Allow oil to warm (but not get too hot) before adding onions. Saute onions until they are about 3/4 done (when the onions get golden and soft, but not soggy and browned). Add mirin, soy sauce, water, sugar, and hon-dashi to wok; stir to combine. Then add beef to the soupy mixture and cook for 10 or so minutes until meat is done. When meat is almost done, add the spinach, stirring and turning the soupy meaty mixture so the greens can cook.

After the meat and spinach are done, add the beaten eggs to the wok. When the eggs are set, you are done! Spoon over steaming hot bowl of rice and you've got a meal to make a non-vegetarian belly very happy. :)

I really want to try making a miso seared sea bass. If you happen to know of any good recipes (for sea bass or anything else really), please let me know! Ah yes, I could also use some good vegetarian recipes too. Can't really live on meat alone. :)

  • Why sea bass when it has such a high mercury content (.27ppm)?  Why not eat one of the lower mercuy content fish?  My favorites are tuna, .12ppm  (NOT albacore) and catfish, .05ppm (in black bean sauce).
  • sounds delicious...i'll have to give it a try...
  • hehe. cuz i like sea bass... :) yeah, actually there are lots of reasons not to eat it, mercury content being one and worries of overfishing being another. i don't often eat it (maybe once a year), so it's a rare treat. Catfish in black bean sauce sounds pretty darned good though... i'm going to have to find a recipe for that. :)
  • Beef bowl is good!!!  :)

  • Yo Pearl! Seen you online but I guess not there to reply.  Been looking for a mini reunion as I get tired of Opt school.  Glad you made it back from India and now you have to update me SERIOUSLY on everything..plus I know someone who knows you..small ass world indeed.
  • sounds great pearli, keep warring w/ the kitchen so i can learn new things to make and eat as well!!!  and yes, for a korean male, i do cook and i know my way around the kitchen  =)
  • I actually have a good recipe for miso marinated chilean sea bass.    I made it recently for a girlfriend of mine and its excellent!!    Too bad chilean sea bass is going on endangered list.  :(     Go to chinese markets to get affordable chilean sea bass.  :D

there's not much to this recipe it.   miso, mirin, i think sugar..and i know im forgetting something.   But i do konw you marinate overnight, and then depending on your preference of whether to eat the fish as the main entree or to eat it with rice, you wipe off the marinade with a towel.   I believe you wip it off when you want to eat the fish alone.  :D      Leaving hte marinade on makes it extremely salty.

  • Congratulations, i hear you're married!!  :D    (thumbs up)   :D
